FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: SKOLL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES THREE NEW APPOINTMENTSSAN JOSE, California - January 21, 2004 - The Skoll Foundation today announced three key appointments that are designed to strengthen the organization at a time of accelerated growth. Barbara Kibbe has been appointed Vice President for Program and Effectiveness, Terry Nagel has been named Communications Officer, and Jeffery "Vaz" Douglas has been designated as Online Community Coordinator.
Barbara brings more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector as a nonprofit executive, grantmaker and foundation program director. She most recently worked as a consultant to a range of corporate and private funders, including the Levi-Strauss Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Fannie Mae Foundation. From 1996 to 2003, she was on the staff of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, where she ultimately served as Director of the Organizational Effectiveness and Philanthropy Program, directing a total of $100 million in grants over six years. Barbara is the coauthor of two books: Succeeding with Consultants, published by the Foundation Center; and Grantmaking Basics, published by the Council on Foundations. She is a founder of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO), a group of more than 700 funders dedicated to building knowledge, promoting learning and encouraging dialogue on nonprofit and grantmaker effectiveness. Her newest publication, "Reflections on the Journey," will be included in a collection of essays on the funder role in building nonprofit capacity; it will be published later this year by Jossey-Bass and Grantmakers for Effective Organizations.
Terry has been an active community and school volunteer for many years. Last spring, she graduated from Coro Northern California's Community Fellows Program, which teaches community leadership and collaboration skills. In November 2003, she was elected to the Burlingame City Council for a four-year term.
In his new position as Online Community Coordinator, he is responsible for the community development of Social Edge, the Skoll Foundation's online meeting place at www.socialedge.org for social entrepreneurs and other interested participants in the social sector. He plans and produces online and live events for the community and develops projects that connect participants. Before joining the Skoll Foundation, Vaz was Director of Community at There, Inc. He previously served as Director of Communities and Support at Communities.com and as Producer for Fujitsu Software Corporation's Cultural Technologies Division.
